ENFIELD, Conn. — The Connecticut Department of Children and Families confirmed that it is investigating an incident in which it says a 12-year-old girl sneaked out of her Enfield home a week before her death.
After FOX61 requested more information from the Enfield Police Department, the public safety administrator sent an incident report about a girl shoplifting from a convenience store near Eve Rogers' home. Names and specific addresses in the report were redacted.
DCF said in a statement that 12-year-old Rogers walked to a nearby store early one morning. Rogers is not named in the redacted police report, but many of the details in the timeline match DCF's statement.
"We can confirm that in March 2026, the agency received a report that Eve had left her home in the early morning hours, without the knowledge or permission of her family, to walk to a nearby store," DCF said. "The department had been investigating these allegations for approximately one week prior to Eve’s untimely death."
Meanwhile, Enfield police reported that just after 2:30 a.m. on March 11, an officer responded to the Mobil Gas Station at 100 Elm St. for a report of shoplifting. The officer found the unidentified girl on Elm Street, a half-mile from her home, walking in the wrong direction.
The girl had an energy drink that cost $4. The officer asked the girl if she knew why he stopped to talk to her; she replied it was because she stole the drink. He also asked her why she was out at such a late hour, and she said she "wanted to have fun."
The officer paid for the drink and gave the girl a ride home. The door to the house was left open, and the girl went to get her mother. According to the report, the mother appeared surprised and confused.
She said her daughter had never sneaked out of the residence before and was in shock. The mother also noted her daughter had a cognitive impairment.
No criminal charges were pursued, and the officer said he contacted DCF.
Again, there was no mention of rogers or her address in the redacted police report.
On Monday, police released unsealed search warrants noting Rogers' mother said she was not aware of her daughter sneaking out. However, the warrants also state Rogers' mother was aware she was having online sexual conversations through the chatting app "Discord" and video game "Roblox."
Rogers' stepfather Anthony Federline is in jail on a $1 million bond after police charged him with sexual assault and risk of injury to a child. A previous arrest warrant states a DNA swab taken from Federline matched one from his stepdaughter.
Last Thursday, a search warrant revealed investigators now believe there’s enough evidence for a murder charge, but it is unclear who that charge would be aimed at.
“We certainly will look at anyone that has involvement or potentially could have involvement in the case," Enfield Police Chief Alaric Fox said.
Results from a sexual assault kit and toxicology report still have not come back yet. Police call it a "very active investigation" with multiple leads still being explored.
Federline is due back in court on May 5.
